Andrew's interview with Del Otro Lado (ARGENTINA)

July 2004

First, I´d Liked That You Could Tell Our What It Pass From "A Time To
Mourn" To Now With Paramaecium...

It has been many years since A Time to Mourn was released and in that time I've been slowly building the elements of the new album which has just been released. The new album is called 'Echoes from the Ground' and takes our music back into a heavier direction.

I Have Understood That Paramaecium Is A Band That Never Play Live... Only
Record An Album When You Want...

That's right. Our last show was in 1995 so we haven't played live for many years and have no plans to. Part of that is due to my own interests. I am busy with my other interests and have never really enjoyed rehearsing or jamming or playing live. But I love the creative process of writing songs and producing albums and so we focus on that now.

You Have Three Albums And The New "Echoes From The Ground", You Could
Speak A Little About Each One?

Our first album "Exhumed of the Earth' released in 1993 has become a doom classic - very heavy, slow in parts and explored the story of the gospel. Our second album "Within the Ancient Forest" released in 1996 was more technical and experimental and explored the storyline of my novel of the same name. Our third album "A Time to Mourn" was released in 1999 and showed us exploring a more modern doom style with goth flavours, and explored themes from the Christian lifestyle. Our latest album is an aggressive and powerful doom death metal style album and should be well received by our fans.

Each Album Of Paramaecium Responds A Conceptual History? The New Disc
Too?

Yes, it follows the story of a nineteenth century explorer, Henry Barclay, as he travels through Palestine.

In The Lyrics, You Have A Special Style For Writing It And Really This
Lyrics Make Think! What Is Your Opinion About The Simple Lyrics Of The
Classical Christians Bands That Only "Preach" To The Same Christians?

I've never had a strong belief that I should write lyrics for Christians or non-Christians in particular. I just write what comes to me. I like to get people to think, without telling them what they should think. We don't force our opinions on others, we merely share our ideas and encourage others to do the same.

What Is The Main Goal Of Paramaecium? And Your Next Plans After The New
Disc?

I know it's been a long time coming this time around but I'm hoping to do an album each year or two from now on. I know I said the same thing five years ago when we released "A Time to Mourn" but hopefully we can do that this time. I'm also exploring a new musical project with Jason De Ron.

The Music Style Of The Band It Was Always A Kind Of Doom Metal, You Feel
Influenced By Any Band? We Can Wait The Same Quality Of The Past Discs In
"Echoes From The Ground"?

The quality of the music on our new album is first class, but the music is more aggressive than our last album, and is almost a mixture of styles, switching from death metal riffs to classic doom and back again. We haven't been infuenced with the style from any one band, but I do listen to a range of music and some of the riffs were directly inspired by certain soundtracks and even some progressive rock.

This Time, What As This Formed The Band? You Have Guest Musicians? You
Have The Deploy Of Different Musicians And Instruments?

Yes, I haven't worked with a solid lineup for almost ten years now, and so I recruit different musicians for each album depending on the requirements. But many of the players from our third album appear on this new one, even though the music and approach is quite different. Instead of giving too much direction to the violinist and drummer, for example, I asked them to do whatever they liked and to be as creative as possible, and the result is just fantastic.

Forgive Me That I Ask You, But I´d Liked Know Because The Name
"Paramaecium" For The Band And It Significant..

A paramecium is a small organism that lives in ponds. The name doesn't really have any special significance.

What Is Your Opinion About The Current Scene Of Christian Metal?

It's hard for me to say because I'm not familiar with many of the bands around at present. There seems to be a lot of mediocre music, as well as very moving music. I suppose that's probanly always the case, but that's my general impression.

I´d Liked That You Can Send A Little Message To The People Of
Latinoamerica...

Sure, I'd like to say thank you to all our supporters in Latin America. It's amazing to me what a huge support base we have there and it's proof that music really can transcend borders, and traverse cultures. Stay strong and be true to yourself.
